Color Theory and Neutrals

Filters - oil Van Gogh practice piece -oilI’m taking a Color Theory class and these are a few images of lessons we’ve been asked to do using a palette knife. (excuse the poor images taken from my phone). I’ve been determining light filters and how they affect tint, tone and temperature, establishing Color Communities. Then we were asked to copy something by an impressionist painter. I chose this selfie by my fav, Van Gogh. These exercises have been eye opening. I realized that neutrals rarely show up in my work but they will in the future. The Color community chart is wrong….why? NO neutrals. I started another and seem to be on track. Van Gogh isn’t quite finished but I learned that this painting is all variations of one hue! On to the next class!
